The Usual Suspects Bit by bit Piece by piece The prison walls fall down But the floodwaters fill the breach And people start to drown And they kick and scratch to stay afloat With their feet still tangled in the weeds That have been allowed to grow All down the centuries And drop by drop And one by one They lose the will to stop They stare down the barrel of a gun While we yawn, and lap it up And people do what they’ve always done The say what they’ve always said “Like father, like son” Till everybody’s dead. And brick by brick Stone by stone Their shiny palaces fall To be replaced with blood and bone While we sit and watch it all And it’s with a whimper Not a shout That the last thing they see Are the usual suspects Safe in a boat With their trousers still round their knees Sailing off to sea. - ©Greg Hancock

FLOWERS OF THE ARAB SPRING Shells rain down , planes circle overhead By the old port road they’re burying their dead Can this bloody ground yield anything Like the Flowers of the Arab Spring? What price freedom what price liberty? For the ones who fell on the road to Tripoli In the silent dawn we prayed that God would bring The Flowers of the Arab Spring Across the border we made a covenant After Friday prayers we’d bring down the government These victories will not be without their sting Like the Flowers of the Arab Spring We dreamed of peace and to live by the rule of law Sleeping rough with blankets on the floor Somewhere by a campfire light the clandestinos sing For the Flowers of the Arab Spring Will our children reap the fruits of all this toil When their fathers’ blood has soaked into the soil? There’s a wounded bird with a broken wing Amongst the flowers of the Arab Spring. - ©Tobias Ben Jacob

Human Cargo Barrel bombs and falling walls And you ask me why we leave People traffic Human cargo Washed up on the beach Mediterranean Sea Afloat in a rubber boat Me and my family Refugees Human cargo Washed up on the beach Walking in the sun through Greece And on through Europe’s dreary reach To a jungle tent No figure of speech Human cargo on the beach Load to be stowed We need a place to go Fled across the world with a family in tow We need a place to go Human cargo I don’t want money I want friends Asylum from the enemy And start again Precious cargo Brought out of the rain Load to be stowed We need a place to go Fled across the world with a family in tow We need a place to go Human cargo - ©Si Barron

Don’t Know Where To Run We have the same body Through this voice we are one Close our eyes to the same moon Wake up to the same sun We all drink the same water We all live on this land We may speak in a different tongue But we still understand What we are is not in our hands But they’re killing in the name of someone Where do you go? You don’t know where to run. We get burned by the same things Defending our loved ones’ fate Most people just want a peacemaker Can a hater really live with hate? We don’t want to leave your home When it’s all that you make To leave things for the unknown What a chance to have to take What we are is not in our hands But they’re killing in the name of someone Where do you go? You don’t know where to run. © John Gallagher

As the day is newly dawning, as the sun is on the rise You can hear the footsteps coming, you can hear the childrens' cries On the wrong side of the wire we are hiding in the trees Heading for the border we are the refugees When your leaders sent the soldiers was the day the seeds were sowed Now comes the bitter harvest and the payment that is owed You bombed us and betrayed us and brought us to our knees Then drove us from our countries to become the refugees You send out boats and planes to keep us from your shores You drove us from our homes but you won't let us into yours Through the snow and through the desert we have to travel on Hope is all that's left us when all we used to have is gone Our children washed up on your beaches, our families drowning in your seas Still we journey onwards. We are the refugees You send out boats and planes to keep us from your shores You drove us from our homes but you won't let us into yours

As a response to the desperate refugee crisis during 2015 and 2016, I invited some of my amazing musical friends to contribute songs for an album to draw attention to and raise money to help the situation. The response I got was truly humbling as one by one these gorgeous songs were sent in. Many had written original songs especially for the project, others contributed older material that seemed to fit the theme.

We linked up with a charitable organisation FROM SYRIA WITH LOVE ( www.fromsyriawithlove.com ) which is based locally in Devon, and works directly with people living in the refugee camps in Lebanon, with ZERO overheads and in direct response to the immediate needs of people there. They respond to requests for practical things like new shoes and writing equipment etc for the children there. They have set up chicken sheds to provide work and income, and where possible buy what is needed from local suppliers so helping the local economy too.

They are sponsoring 4 schools to provide education for children.
supported more than 100 families with aid baskets, drilled a well that supplies 600 people with water, and are doing much more for emergencies and relief for families inside Syria and Lebanon.

With their contacts on the ground in the camps they can operate in places where help is needed the most because of the lack of local charities and absence of UN organisations.

Please check out the great work they are doing and donate generously. Every penny that is donated goes directly to those who need it most. Their website shows many examples of how funds have been used.

All profits from this album will go directly to From Syria With Love and so directly to help people living in fear, and sometimes terrible conditions in exile from their homes.
